While the average person doesn’t have to come up with super creative on the ground poses, it can still be fun! If you’re starting out a blog or even a “just for fun” photo, it can be hard to come up with a pose in the spur of the moment. When I was first starting out taking pictures regularly, I would just freeze when I shot my pics. You can use these ideas for your engagement or family photo shoot too! Here’s 4 ways to pose on the ground that can spur your own creativity!
4 Ways to Pose on the Ground (starting from easy level of difficulty)
The Mermaid
The thing to note with this one is that it’s really easy AND flattering. Sometimes when we do sitting poses, you’ll find you give yourself waist rolls even if you are not overweight. This pose allows you to stretch out your body and look longer and leaner. Most people can do this pose!
How to:
- Rolling onto your side, sit on the edge or your butt.
- Pull legs all to one side and bring your ankles and knees together.
- Scoot out supporting arm on the floor a little further out to stretch out and smooth out potential rolls.
- Arm variations: I did the classic “teacup arm” but you can bring your free arm up over your head or across your opposite shoulder for a little sass!
Elbow Rest
This pose is still easy but requires a bit of flexibility in your hips and glutes. Wearing heels will make it tougher but you should be able to execute with sneakers or flat shoes. I like this pose because it doesn’t look like you’re trying to hard but it looks impressive. This is also a great way to show off your shoes!
How to:
- Sit leaning towards one side or the other.
- Bend the knee of your supporting side.
- Swing free leg over your supporting leg and find the floor with the bottom of your foot.
- Assess how much range of motion you have. This will determine the best option for your arms.
- Arm variations include this elbow rest on my knee. You could also just bring both hands back behind you but you would have to angle your body from camera so it’s not just a crotch shot.
Flying Camel
This pose is getting a little tougher. Out of the 4 ways to pose on the ground, this one is a fave. I love it because you can get some great angles and show off a belt, hair whip and feel a bit rock n’ roll! You can also control the angle here to be more sideways and look really different. I wouldn’t recommend this if you have back issues or bad knees.
How to:
- Kneel on ground and angle your body away from camera to your desired angle.
- Reach back with one hand towards your angles.
- Find your balance using your core and let go of your hands.
- My trademark is whipping my hair so this was a good place to add that in. You can also throw a hat back or hold on to it or support your head in your hands for a sexy look.
Horizontal Can Can
This pose looks harder than it is. I promise! It’s a bit harder because you’re balancing and throwing one leg up in the air but you don’t have to be super flexible to do it, just have arm strength. This is definitely a “younger pose” (I’m not) but if you have a young spirit then go for it!
How to:
- Sit down and bring feet on the ground with hands behind you.
- First challenge is to bring your hips off the ground proving your glute strength (LOL).
- Test how far you can go and throw up which ever leg feels more willing to up in the air. My right leg is stronger so it’s easier for me to throw up my left one, for example.
- Some variations are to throw your head back a bit for an advanced version. Or you can let go of the opposite had that is up for a break dancer look! The important thing is to look like you’re having fun. 🙂
My Two Favorite Tools for Taking Pictures
Here’s two items that make taking pictures easier, especially when you have no one to take pictures for you!
Hope these inspired your next on the ground photo shoot! The most important thing when posing for pictures is to find angles that flatter you personally. I have found that the more fun I have during a shoot, the better the pictures are. If you can just remember that you can just delete the picture if you don’t like it, it will help your psyche. The other thing that helped my mindset was to approach the picture taking as if I’m making fun of poses I’ve seen in magazines. I know that sounds weird but again, if you switch to a “fun” frame of mind, it will go a lot smoother. Happy picture taking, and never forget that you’re beautiful! Love, Z
