I read a quote the other day on that said: “Hustle until the people you could never reach start reaching out to you.” It definitely struck a chord and I also thought about how to dress for the hustle. Whether you’re starting your first corporate job, in a rut with your office clothes or work from home but occasionally need to show up to a meeting somewhere, I have ideas for you! Here’s what to think about:
Blazers
A blazer can change the same top and pants dramatically and make a couple of outfits out of nothing! If you wear black slacks and a black top, you can have a totally different look if you wear a blazer. Along with helping with variety, they can make some NSFW outfits totally acceptable, such as dresses with low cuts or sleeveless! If you don’t know where to start pick a well cut black one such as the one I’m wearing here for starters. Once you have a great fitting black blazer, you can move on to grey, camel, navy , pinstripes (a fave) or even a pop of color! Here are some great finds now:
Button downs
A great button down should not only look great, it should feel good because you’re in it all day. It should also travel well so that you don’t have to dry clean all of your work clothes. I love button downs because they always feel powerful and sexy! These are some of my favorite brands, materials or on my wish list.
A Good Bag
By good bag, I don’t mean expensive bag, I mean a bag that’s GOOD to you and treats you well. It carries a lot, it looks good with a lot of different outfits (who wants to change their work bag everyday? Or should I say who has time to?), it ages well, you can take from work to a night out, etc. In a sense, your work handbag is like your bestie. Here are some from all different price ranges that have served me well.
Good Denim
Things have really changed and now more and more office environments regularly embrace jeans. Whether you can just wear jeans on Friday or every day, you probably need denim that’s not super distressed. I love distressed denim but after not having knees in my jeans for a couple of years, I’ve been craving beautiful unstressed denim. To make it less boring, I found and loved these pair of jeans that look put together but anything but your everyday look. Here are those, plus a few others including a new brand I just discovered called 1822 Denim, super lux and very affordable! Who Wears the Pants
Out of all the fashion things I overthink, I don’t overthink a good pair of work pants. If they fit well, are comfortable and chic, I don’t ask for much more. When I was working a corporate job I would stock up on a couple of fits and call it day. One of the styles is still around: the Sloane from Banana Republic. If fits and flatters most body types.
Toot Your Own Shoe Horn
Ok, here is where I cheated. I usually wore sneakers on my commute to the office then changed into nice shoes. I think that’s pretty much why Starbucks bathrooms exist by the way. 😉 Here are devastatingly beautiful pumps that will give you the extra boost!
THE LBD
You need a little black dress that you can wear alone or with a blazer or cardigan. It can break up endless days of pants and take you straight to date night! I’m only linking a couple here but basically you’re looking for comfort, great fit, length and a classic element that says “you’ll wear me forever!”
