Q & A with Opunique founder Mary

1. Have you always loved the brands you design on? Not really. I was a hippie tomboy. Never really appreciated the beauty and workmanship put into Chanel pieces until later in life. 

2. What inspires you? I’m inspired by my customers. It makes me happy when people love something I made. When I’m making a piece…I think “would Rihanna ️this?”

3. Did you ever think you’d be an entrepreneur? Never had aspirations of being an entrepreneur. I’ve always loved math and teaching. But a few years ago I felt like something was missing and that there was something else I was supposed to be doing. I started making scarves and pillows. But I switched to jewelry because I bought a wood cuff bracelet that had metal hardware attached to it. I broke it and the seller didn’t have anymore. And I thought ” I can make one myself”! I watched a bunch of YouTube videos to learn how to use tools. And I loved the whole process of designing something and being able to bring my vision to life.

4. Advice for women wanting to do what you’re doing? I think fear of failure is the #1 deterant for success. If you have an idea…give it a try. If it doesn’t work…then try something new.
